What is a jewelry appraisal?
Fine jewelry appraisals are the qualified opinion of an expert in the field of gemology pertaining to the value of the article described. It first requires an accurate representation of the item and its components—the gemstones and mountings—their identification, and qualitative grading against industry standards. It then requires the application of relative value for the intended purpose.
Some types of appraisals include:
Insurance scheduling; Insurance claim, loss, or damage; Estate tax; Federal estate tax; Probate; Trust formation and establishing tax basis; Estate Distribution; Charitable
donation; Divorce settlement; Liquidation, forced or orderly; Sales advice or consultation as pre-sale examination; Bankruptcy; Confirmation of new purchase.
What is involved in an appraisal?
Some aspects of appraisal include determining the purpose of the appraisal; determining whether the item is a production piece, is custom designed and manufactured, or is handmade; determining whether it's antique or a modern reproduction of an antique design; determining its value through additional research if the item is an antique or a period piece no longer in production.
